I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I would neglect my studies over the burden of carrying school books; crazy, right?  In my defense, though, those books were heavy, and I didn’t need 90% of the stuff that was in them anyways.

It’s funny how no one even considers how much of a hassle something this elementary can be for students until the practice gets replaced with a much more efficient alternative.  Nevertheless, I’m happy to report that this is exactly what Symtext has done with their revolutionary Liquid Textbooks, and I want to be the first to thank them for it.

Symtext’s mission statement describes this technology as “a unique, interactive learning experience.”  However these Liquid Textbooks, or in simpler terms ebooks, are capable of advancing the digital revolution in both the fields of education and publishing.

In essence, these ebooks allow teachers to produce customized content for their students; content that is specifically-tailored for their courses’ exact needs.  These digital textbooks can be individualized to the fullest; professors can take material from various publications and weave them together to create their own enhanced learning aids.  In effect, the Liquid Textbook is poised to render traditional textbooks and course packs obsolete.

This means that students will no longer have to purchase numerous books for any given class.  I personally used to have to “buy” upwards of three textbooks per college course.  I quoted the word buy because I would not, and could not, actually afford to purchase all of these books.  Let’s do some math shall we?  I took four courses per semester when I was at college; simple multiplication determines that three books per class while attending four classes would mean that I would have to buy twelve textbooks per semester.  Each textbook would cost, on average $80.00, so twelve of these would set me back close to a grand, that’s $1,000.00 folks.  Now, I don’t know what kind of situation you had set up, but this college kid could not come anywhere close to affording all of these books.  And, price aside, I didn’t have the capacity to carry them around with me everywhere either.

Electronic or Digital textbook

First off, schools have taken an unfortunate approach to textbooks by changing versions and editions seemingly monthly, or at bare minimum, yearly. This ‘forces’ students to buy the newest edition so that they can keep up with their classes properly. Not surprisingly, this stupid and unfair move had created outlets that have gone from little known insider sites to full-on high-traffic shops for rental or used books like:

If the universities were smart, they would realize the potential in the eBook market and would jump on board before the market catches up and swallows them whole. In any case, though this won’t be ‘the year’ that the eBook takes over, it certainly is showing strong signs. Students are more tech-savvy than ever before, they are more aware of sites offering the same books for cheaper, and they are more willing to try out an electronic textbook, especially with lower pricing. Still, the pricing is a touchy subject, and not just for the textbook market, but for the entire eBook market. A quick search for a common Calculus textbook yielded results of $109 for the electronic edition while the hard-copy was listed at $147. Granted there is a price difference, but we’ll have to see bigger strides and commitment from the publishers and all involved to get the electronic versions lowered.

Is it time for your child to move towards eBook versions of their textbooks? Perhaps you may want to try it out. One thing is for sure, it’s not a question of ‘if’ but ‘when’. The stage is certainly set for the fall of the ‘old textbook/university paradox’ with the introduction of the ‘mobile ebook-carrying digital student’. Ye be warned universities and textbook publishers, should you decide to force students down the path of most difficulty, you’ll find that students are invariably the sharpest and most willing to try alternate and ‘cheaper’ approaches. Learn from the music industry’s extremely delayed acceptance and understanding of the digital music revolution.

These fantastic developers over at Kdan Mobile Software have created a suite of products.  One of them is their PDF reader, which comes in two versions, a paid version and free version.  I have used both and I am very impressed with the features and capabilities of the software and what it enables my iPhone to do.

On their site, they have information on their current PDF Reader for iPhone.  I’ve been using this app for a while now to read some of the free ebooks I have downloaded to my iPhone.  Among the many features are a select few that I find stand out from the rest.  One of them is the ability to lock the screen rotation and lock the width.  Furthermore, you can set it to slowly pan down the document at whatever pace you set.  Essentially, once you get the hang of these features, you can sit there and comfortably read an eBook on your iPhone at your own pace.

If you were getting kind of giddy about this feature set, wait until I tell you about this next part.  You can ACTUALLY scan a picture or page with your camera and turn it into a PDF.  It even has fairly good text recognition built in, so if you have a standard page with no fancy fonts, you can scan it into your phone and turn it into a PDF.  Amazing!

PDF reader for iPhone

This application is perfect for home, student, or business use.  If you’re looking for a simple application to read your PDFs on the go, this is a great choice.  Furthermore, the on-the-fly PDF creation capabilities are perfect for the traveling businessman.  Of course, all of these features being constrained to a mobile device has its drawbacks, but for the most part, this application gets the job done.  Imagine being at a restaurant and scanning the menu, turning it into a PDF that has recognized the text without you needing to input the text.  Next, you email your friends/family/coworkers the content of the menu for whatever reason.  There’s bound to be 100′s more uses for these valuable features.

With library management and capability to download PDFs from wifi spots, this application doesn’t really fall short in any places.  We give our thumbs up to this fantastic PDF reader and application for the iPhone.

I wanted to share with you this really great resource I recently came across.  It’s a blog called PDF for Lawyers, and it caters to all things PDF.  Not only is the site extremely practical, but it also comes to showcase the immense values and capabilities of the portable document format.

You already know that the foundation of the law is based in written documentation, right?  Well, as a lawyer, arguments and verdicts are dependent on this documentation.  Today, PDFs are used to increase the speed in which lawyers work, drastically cutting down the amount of time and effort it takes them to research topics and transfer files.  PDFs facilitate the speed and ease in which lawyers can carry out their projects.  Anyways, this is just one of the general themes that the site emphasizes and I thought I would reiterate it here because it’s something that you too should consider.  PDFs don’t only make sense for lawyers; they’re convenient for just about everyone.

The weblog is well aware of the power of PDFs and in fact had these credentials in mind when creating it.  The creators wanted to “explore some of the possibilities for leveraging some very slick technology” because PDFs offer a LOT of possibilities.  PDF for Lawyers stresses the incorporation of PDF technology into the workplace because it enhances communication, office management and research skills, traits that are extremely important in all professions.

I really love the mentality of the weblog as well.  Among many of its unique – yet employable – policies, PDF for Lawyers encourages its readers to make the switch and go paperless.  For example, in their how to (successfully) switch to a paperless practice post, the author reveals that, having worked as a freelance lawyer in the past, he currently manages to work completely paperless, keeping all of his work not on file, but in files.  After stressing the point that this can be done, he goes on to tell his readers exactly how he did it, and how they can do it for themselves.

This is a topic that they constantly frequent.  Just recently a new post went up arguing the relevance, importance and legitimacy to cutting paper out of your life.  You can find it here.  I don’t know if it’s because these guys are lawyers, but their arguments are really decisive…

There are many great articles to be found on PDF for Lawyers that delve into the finer features of the software.  In particular, the disadvantage of locked PDFs discusses how users can incorporate security features into their PDFs.  Little, sly secrets like how users can password protect their work so that it’s unable to be opened are revealed.  Even features like blocking a PDF from being printed and stopping a PDF from being copied and pasted are examined in detail.

In another post, called barrier to scanning #001, the issues of scanning legitimacy are raised.  It’s very cool to see how, what you thought was a pretty hum-drum topic, gets turned into an engaging philosophical debate over the value of a piece of paper.  For this reason alone I like to check in with PDF for Lawyers on a regular basis.

The issue in question was about whether or not you would keep a piece of paper once it’s been scanned and saved to file – I’d love to read your thoughts on this in the comments section.  The argument stemmed over the fact that if “the original,” i.e. the tangible piece of paper, had to be kept then what would be the point of scanning it anyways?

The author of this post went on about the merits of scanning, and I must admit that even I have since reconsidered my standpoint.  He let his readers know that he scans everything, even his receipts, because copies of a document do not distort the original’s intention in any way.   He also argued that originals can disappear, so again I’ll bring up the receipts; it’s actually a pretty smart way to store them all when you think about it.  In summary, I’ll just say that when you scan your files, not only are you saving proof/evidence/documentation, but you’re also saving the environment.  Darn, even I’m starting to sound like a lawyer now!

All in all, even though PDF for Lawyers talks about how PDFs affect the lawyer profession at larger, it is important to consider that so many of these factoids can be applied to all you guys, regardless of your job.  The weblog is easy to read, super-informative, and generally just knows the PDF game better than anyone else I’ve seen on the Internet.  So if you’ve got questions and are looking for a top-quality site that specializes in the world of PDF, a rare find on the Internet, trust me, then look no further than PDF for Lawyers.
